Prescription and Repair Topical Skin Care Products

Your daily skin care routine with effective prescription skin care products is your essential first step for maintaining beautiful blemish free skin and preventing and correcting environmental damage and facial aging.

At Las Colinas Dermatology you will undergo a professional skin evaluation and then a topical skin care regimen will be recommended based on your unique face and skin. I recommend that many of my patients utilize some form of topical therapy. Today’s prescription products are very effective and if you are serious about keeping your skin healthy and preventing aging, then prescription skin care is often the answer.

The only products that have been proven to work to reduce wrinkles at this point in time are the vitamin-A cousin tretinoin (in products like Retin-A
and Renova), some antioxidants like Vitamin C serums, some hydroxy acids, and possibly products containing cell-growth factors or peptides.

Retin-A
and Renova
Retin-A along with its more moisturizing version, Renova is the only topical treatment approved by the FDA as effective for reversing facial aging changes. They also help to prevent precancerous lesions and skin cancer. There’s nothing better available in a topical form. Everyone who can tolerate them should be using one!

Topical Retin-A
has, been clinically proven to improve the epithelium, provide skin exfoliation, stimulate new collagen production, prevent collagen breakdown and lessen pigmentation.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

The AHAs– glycolic acid and lactic acid–are derived from fruit and milk sugars. AHAs produce exfoliation and stimulate the production of new collagen in the dermis, so they are a valuable component of most anti-aging skin care regimens.

AHAs are frequently used both in prescription and non-prescription forms for patients who cannot tolerate Retin-A
, or in combination with Retin-A. In my practice, the MDForte and Vivite cleansers and lotions have proven to be both effective and well tolerated.

Vitamin C - Antioxidants
A comprehensive antioxidant program can help prevent photoaging and the onset of more serious skin conditions. Topical antioxidants have now been shown to provide up to eight times the skin’s natural protection from UV damage.

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that has multiple anti-aging effects. As a free radical scavenger, it promotes new collagen formation and actively protects skin from the aging effects of UV radiation in sunlight, above and beyond the benefit provided by sun block. This effect can be enhanced by the addition of Vitamin E Skinceuticals Pholoretin and Skinceuticals C E Ferulic serum are antioxidant combinations that deliver advanced protection against photoaging - neutralizing free radicals and helping to build collagen.

Cell Growth Factors
SkinMedica and now several other companies have pioneered topical serums and lotions that use cell growth factors. Cell growth factors come from fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) of young skin cells grown in the lab. These fibroblasts make potent growth factors that fuel growth of healthy, young skin, including collagen and elastic fibers that give the skin its softness and suppleness.

Cell growth factor skin care products like the TNS Recovery Complex and TNS Essential Serum take 3-6 months to work, so be patient. But this can be a great addition to a skin care regimen that already includes sunscreen, Vitamin A creams, and an antioxidant.
