Fotofacial or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light Photo-rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment using pulses of light applied directly to the skin to revitalize texture, reduce redness and sun damage and improve broken capillaries. While there are lasers that can eliminate blood vessels, and chemical peels and bleaching creams for irregular pigmentation, no other procedure combines these effects with the improvement in skin texture provided by the IPL procedure. The Fotofacial requires minimal or no down-time.

Intense Pulsed Light can simultaneously treat a number of facial concerns safely and effectively, such as:
  • Broken capillaries (telangiectasia)
  • Sun spots (lentigines)
  • Redness due to rosacea
  • Mottled sun damage on the neck (poikiloderma)
  • Sun damage

IPL treatments can also improve the texture of the skin and make pores appear smaller.

What can I expect?
A topical anesthetic is usually used prior to each treatment. A cold gel is then applied to the skin, after which the IPL hand-piece gently delivers pulses of light. Some patients experience a slight stinging sensation, while others feel nothing at all . Treatment is typically administered in a series of five sessions, each about 20 minutes, three weeks apart.

Post-treatment there may be slight redness and rarely some mild bruising. By dividing the treatment into five sessions, the procedure provides gradual improvement with minimal risk and no down time.
