Now there is a treatment for that bothersome “double chin” that doesn’t seem to respond to diet or exercise alone. KYBELLA® is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat). A double chin is common in both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain.
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down dietary fat. When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA® destroys the fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store fat any longer.
Dr. Alison Black or Cheryl Sundlov, PA-C will customize your KYBELLA® treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. During each treatment a topical anesthetic is applied, then KYBELLA® is injected into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. The most common side effects of KYBELLA® injection are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of lumpiness in the treatment area. Typically these are worse after the first session, and resolve within 2-4 weeks after each treatment.
Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced about 6 weeks apart. Once the desired results are achieved after a series of treatments, the area does not typically need to be retreated in the future.
